Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
