A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
